Mission

The role of the Senior System Engineer is preparing, deploying and maintaining customers’ platforms in a complex and demanding software and hardware Digital TV (DTV) environment. The postholder will be recognised as a specialist who is able to analyse and solve difficult problems under severe pressure.

Independent and autonomous, the postholder is nevertheless a team player with a customer-driven outlook.

Responsibilities

TECHNICAL SKILLS

  • Operating Systems including professional versions of Microsoft Windows and Red Hat Linux.
  • Complex server solutions (RAID, Clustering, SAN, etc)
  • Computer networking (firewall, switch, router, protocols, routing, TCP/IP packet analysis, etc)
  • Database management including experience with non-transactional database (e.g. MongoDB, Cassandra, Neo4J…) and the related query language(s). Knowledge of a graph db is a plus
  • Strong knowledge of web and http protocols (http, Apache & NGNIX web servers, cloud computing, CDN)
  • Professional experience in building scripts (UNIX & LINUX shell, python, PERL, Javascript)

 

SOFT SKILLS

  • The System Engineer is always customer-driven in his/her attitude and demonstrates good interpersonal skills, face-to-face, over the phone or when writing e-mails
  • Keen on sharing his/her knowledge and experience with colleagues +++
  • In addition to the language of the base country, the System Engineer is fluent in English. Any additional language is a plus

Requirements / Profile

The System Engineer will be required to:

GENERAL

  • Represent the company at customer’s premises
  • Acquire/maintain an adequate level of expertise on every technical aspect related to his/her work
  • Participate actively in the system engineering group’s life, e.g. attend meetings and workshops, propose improvements

DEPLOYMENT AND MAINTENANCE (S1L)

  • Deploy Digital TV platforms according to the deployment plan –or equivalent–, complying with the best practices developed in the team
  • Help to find solutions or workarounds to overcome blocking issues
  • Listen to customers and help them to handle their DTV platform. Rely on a more appropriate interlocutor (Program Manager, Expert System Engineer, Architect…) whenever needed
  • At the end of each mission, prepare a Technical Intervention Report for debriefing and continuous learning purposes

SUPPORT SECOND LEVEL (S2L)

  • Represent Central Services within the company
  • Provide workarounds or solutions to complex problems encountered by field engineers (S1L)
  • Produce Training material and Service Documentation on new products and solutions
  • Resort to R&D (S3L) whenever a problem is too complex to be solved autonomously
  • Comply with the processes and KPIs defined for the S2L Service

HOTLINE

  • Take part in the Hotline shifts on a regular basis, under the responsibility of the Head of Hotline
  • Answer to customers in the most appropriate manner (according to “Callback methodology” and “Troubleshooting methodology”)
  • Escalate calls when necessary according to “Hotline Guidelines”

REPORTING

  • While on mission, report on a regular basis to the person responsible for the mission
  • Report activity using the corporate tools available (e.g. resource planning, CRM, EPM)
  • Report any other problems faced during the day-to-day activities to the Line Manager

SPECIALISATIONS

Not all specialisations are applicable to every Senior System Engineer and they may vary with the evolution of the team and the individual progression but some potential venues could be:

TECHNICAL TRAINER

  • Participate in the preparation of training material
  • Deliver internal or customer training on the products and solutions deployed in the field

DEPLOYMENT MANAGER

  • Provide help to the Program Manager for the technical aspects of a program
  • Provide help to write technical documentation related to the deployment or the migration of a solution (e.g. Deployment Plan, Site Acceptance Tests, Handover etc)
  • Take responsibility for the correct execution of every technical step (deployment plan, SAT, etc) and coordinate the work of the resources involved in these steps
  • Provide help to the Program Manager in the management of the project, especially in the absence of the Program Manager
