Manufacturing boost for Sony UK Tec

Electronics specialist Sony UK Technology Centre is manufacturing over six million products annually, according to new statistics.

As the Pencoed-based facility celebrates its 25th anniversary, it’s seen the number of devices manufactured leap from 20,000 units in 2005/06 to just over 6.4 million this year.

The business said this increase is being driven by success across its entire manufacturing operation, along with its third-party contract manufacturing division.

Opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1993, the state-of-the-art facility produces thousands of HD broadcast and professional camera systems for worldwide distribution and use in outdoor sporting events such as the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

In 2012, Sony UK Tec signed Raspberry Pi as a client. Over the past five years, it’s created 10 million of the minicomputers and put the Welsh electronics industry on the map.

Gerald Kelly, director of professional services at Sony UK Tec, said the business is continuing to diversify its offering and strengthen its core manufacturing operation.

“Sony UK TEC’s ability to produce thousands of industry-leading broadcast cameras, and high-specification third-party products is clearly an achievement we are immensely proud of as a facility,” he commented.

“Looking back at our 25-year history this growth was something we couldn’t possibly have forecast when we shifted our business focus back in 2005, however it is a milestone we are thrilled to embrace now.

“This growth has been undoubtedly greatly influenced by the site’s continuous focus on innovation and diversification, which we believe has been essential to our enduring success, not just in Wales but internationally, over the decades.”

He credited the success of the business to its 600-strong staff. “None of this would have been possible without the dedication and endless talents of our expert manufacturing team members throughout Sony UK TEC, who we cannot thank enough,” added Kelly.

“We now look forward to building on this achievement by focusing on the future of state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and solutions-based manufacturing in the coming years.

“This will ultimately offer our customers even greater value and ensure Sony UK TEC is perfectly positioned to meet the challenges presented by a rapidly evolving manufacturing industry.”
