New digital co-working space launches in Cardiff

Tramshed Tech, a new collaborative working space for digital businesses, entrepreneurs and freelancers, has officially opened its doors in the Welsh capital.

The space is based at the original Tram Depot, a landmark building in central Cardiff. It’s been an integral part of the city landscape since the 90s and is still evolving.

It was originally built as a place in the city where trams could be kept and maintained, although it’s since been transformed into an arts venue and cultural space.

There’s a large co-working area with bespoke tables and hot desks, along with a meeting room that can hold up to 40 people. It sports a projector and Voip system.

Other facilities include three small meeting pods where around 8 people can work, aptly named The Stable, The Engine Room and The Boiler Room. So the building’s history isn’t lost.

They can be hired by both members and non-members for a variety of meetings and events, as and when required. The space has a few smaller break-out areas, too.

As well as this, there are dedicated offices for larger firms, with 20 business units alongside the main co-working space. The facilities are open 24/7 with admin and business support.

Tramshed Tech is a private sector-funded project and was created by Louise Harris and Mark John, the directors of Big Learning Company. They had been struggling to find a suitable office space so designed their own.

Elizabeth Arnold, head of memberships at Tramshed Tech, told us: “Our aim for this development is for Tramshed Tech is to become a natural home for the digital tech and creative sectors in Cardiff with the hope of attracting sector specific Welsh entrepreneurs and small businesses.

“We want to grow this industry within Wales, and with BBC Wales and S4C on our doorstep in their planned new broadcast centre – and with some fantastic companies including WildFlame Productions, Blurrt and Red and Black Films already signed up to be our office tenants – we see this as just the start.”
