Welsh AI company develops chatbot for pro football team

A Welsh artificial intelligence company has built a chatbot for professional Italian football club AS Roma.

Developed by Cardiff-based We Built Bots, the bot is available through the Facebook Messenger platform and is aimed at improving customer service.

Named by fans in honour of award-winning striker Gabriel Batistuta, the bot provides Roma fans with the latest information about the club.

Despite only being designed to answer simple questions from fans, Botistuta becomes more sophisticated based on the number of times it is used.

Paul Rogers, head of digital media at AS Roma, believes that the AI solution will improve interaction with fans. “We’re excited about the launch of the new chatbot,” he said.

“We’ve been working with We Build Bots, who are experts in this space, for a number of months on the project and we think it will help speed up the response time for many fans who are trying to find out particular information about the club.”

Founded in April 2016, We Build Bots is the creator of IntelAgent, an AI-powered platform for customer service departments, events, charities, utility providers, publishers and sports clubs.

It’s helping an array of organisations take advantage of artificial intelligence and chatbot systems, including Sport Wales. The firm designed a chatbot to help increase participation in sport and connect teams with clubs.

Paul Shepherd, chief executive officer at We Build Bots, said: “AS Roma has a reputation for innovating in the social and digital space and we were very keen to work with them on this project.

“The launch is just the start of what we are doing together. In the next few months, we will be further integrating our AGAME platform and deep integration capabilities into Botistuta to help Roma further connect and engage with supporters.”
