Welsh glass manufacturer turns to autonomous tech

The owners of Ebbw Vale-based Cwmtillery Glass Centre have turned to autonomous technology to optimise advanced manufacturing processes in its factory.

After securing £862,000 from Lombard Asset Finance, the company has installed a fully automated double glazing line in a bid to support its 130 employees.

Paul and Cerianne Hayward, who own the business, explained that the technology will enable it to produce 850 double-glazed sealed units within just eight hours.

Last year, Cwmtillery Glass purchased its first factory robot, which has helped it increase productivity by over 120 per cent. The firm said it’s created demand for new staff as well.

Founded in 2000, it creates and installs sealed units, roof glass and decorative additions. However, before the assistance of robotics, the company struggled to meet demand.

Paul Hayward, director of the company, said his company is investing in autonomous manufacturing systems to support its staff and ensure it can meet growing orders.

“Lombard has continually supported our business through investment that has allowed us to grow and drive efficiencies, while remaining competitive and retaining the high value service we provide our customers,” he said.

“This is the second glass cutting machine we’ve purchased with their assistance, and the new equipment has helped us to boost productivity significantly over the last year.”

David Wherry, relationship director of Lombard Asset Finance, said he’s witnessed great results since the glass manufacturer adopted the robotic systems.

“Cwmtillery Glass’ continuing investment and upgrading of equipment is helping them to drive efficiencies and improve productivity. Lombard is pleased to be able to support the company with their growth plans,” he said.

NatWest relationship director Adrian Coles was responsible for introducing Cwmtillery Glass to Lombard, which acts as the bank’s asset finance partner. He’s remained a supporter of these technological developments.

He said: “Cwmtillery Glass is an important employer in Ebbw Vale that prioritises innovation and quality.  We are proud to play a role in helping ensure the business continues its strong growth, and are confident that it will continue to play an important role here for many years to come.”
