Welsh tech firm accompanies prime minister on African trade mission
Sure Chill, a technology firm based in Cardiff, recently joined Prime Minister Theresa May on a trade mission to Africa.
The PM travelled to the continent to discuss trade deals with other world leaders, which comes as the possibility of a “hard” Brexit continues to increase.
It served as an opportunity for the UK’s brightest technology companies and entrepreneurs to build new investment, trading and export ties.
Founded in 209, Sure Chill has developed cooling technology that maintains refrigerator temperature during power outages. It’s targeted at the medical industry.
Approved by the World Health Organization, the refrigerator is capable of running without power for more than 12 days in ambient temperatures of 43°C.
This patented solution is protecting life-saving, temperature-sensitive medicines in over 47 countries around the world. Sure Chill claims to have helped save millions of lives.
Nigel Saunders, CEO of Sure Chill, represented the business in the four-day tour of South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya. He networked with other businesses, policymakers and entrepreneurs.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to engage with senior industrialists and politicians in some of the fastest growing economies in Africa where our product can really make a difference to communities,” he said.
“By storing energy within cooling devices we can provide life-saving and life-enhancing technology in regions with frequently interrupted power – or no power at all.”
PM Theresa May commended Sure Chill and the other businesses that embarked on the tour, saying: “The Welsh companies I am taking to Africa are leading examples of how UK innovation is transforming the technology sector on a global scale.
“The ambition and commitment to driving change that Sure Chill showcase is exactly what I want to see from British businesses, and I am pleased they are joining me on this important visit as the UK looks to deepen its partnership with Africa.”
Secretary of State for Wales Alun Cairns added: “Wales is an ambitious outward-looking nation, home to some of the most innovative businesses developing products that are being sold around the world.
“Sure Chill is a shining example of a company capitalising on the global demand for their goods and saving and protecting the lives of those who are hundreds and thousands of miles away.”
